Norma Margaret Shaar
Norma, Ms. Shaar, Coach Shaar, or as she was affectionately known as “Aunt Norma” was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Lebanese immigrants, Richard and Suria Shaar. She was the third born to a family of five children. As a family experiencing the hardship of The Great Depression, they relocated to Charleston, WV. Through the tireless work and combined efforts of her parents and beloved aunt and uncle, the family of nine established roots on the West Side of Charleston. She was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School and Marshall University.
Norma grew up loving sports and athletics, but unfortunately excelled at a time when women athletes went essentially unnoticed for their skills. Norma thrived in every endeavor she tried: Basketball, Softball, Track and Field. Her love of athletics led her to a long career in teaching, coaching, and serving as the Athletic Director at Chillicothe High School. She was inducted into the Chillicothe Hall of Fame in 2013. Norma retired after 30 years from the Ross County School system and returned to Charleston to start her second career at Stonewall Middle school where she continued teaching and coaching until 2017. Her long career spanned almost eight decades. Her friends and co-workers were abundant and the students she taught and coached still remember her to this day. Norma’s desire to interact with people led her to became a familiar figure at the Civic Center, Laidley Field, and Power Park. They made sure to leave the rowdy sections to her! Norma leaves behind a Legacy of excellence and an impact on so many that will linger in our hearts. Her days as a World Class Athlete may only be recognized or remembered by a few, but her leadership helped pave the way for women in athletics today. Ms Shaar, Coach Shaar, and Aunt Norma will never be forgotten. Left to cherish her memory are sister: Sallie Shaar Waheed of Houston TX, brother: Kamal (Nancy) Shaar, South Charleston, nieces: Kama Sue Shaar, Palatine IL, Kamilla Shaar Rashid (Mitchell), Charleston, WV, Kathy (Joe) Link, Houston, TX, Carol (Fran) Testa, NJ, nephews: Rob Waheed, Houston, TX, Dickie Lamb, NJ, and Patrick Lamb, AZ, grandnephews: Kam Craft, Sabian, Gabriel, Zavier Rashid, and Chris Testa, grandnieces: Keaton Craft, Sarah Link, Sarah and Katy Testa, and Kelly and Kristin Waheed. Aunt Norma loved and cherished every one of her family members. Last, but not least her beloved Dog, Shadow, who was rightly named. In lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, or HospiceCare.
A service to honor Norma’s life will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday March 9, 2023 at Snodgrass Funeral Home, celebrated by family and friends. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. Entombment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston, WV.

Kelli Harrah
Kelli Beth Harrah, 63, of South Charleston, passed away Sunday, March 5, after an extended illness. Kelli was the daughter of the late Bonnie & Dick Harrah. She is survived by her sister, Karen Harrah, and nephew, Kylar Harrah; both of Arizona.
To say Kelli Harrah lit up a room is an understatement. She typically blew in like a small tropical storm and her personality immediately filled up every room upon her arrival.
Kelli was a 1978 graduate of Winfield High School. She had so many people who loved her and whom she loved deeply. Her sudden departure has left a lot of people with a broken heart. In her time on this earth, the number of people whose lives she touched and whose lives were enriched by knowing her and loving her are countless.
She was beautiful, smart, generous, thoughtful, hilarious, fiercely loyal, vivacious, and a fashion plate. She was also brutally honest with everyone she knew and loved, especially regarding your choice of outfit or current hair style.
There is no one else like Kelli Harrah and there never will be. If you were lucky enough to have been loved by her, there was no question that you knew she loved you. She will be deeply missed by many.
Kelli didn’t want a funeral service; she couldn’t bear the thought of people crying over her. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to the Chase Healing Fund (ChaseHealingFund.com) in Kelli’s name and in honor of her beloved late dogs, JoJo and Muffin, and her loyal-to-the-end girl, Zoey.

Craig Lee Selby
Born on December 13, 1945, to Clyde and Sarah McIntyre Selby, Craig Lee Selby grew up in Morgantown, WV. He passed away on February 6, 2023, in Charleston, alongside family after a long illness.
Craig loved growing up on Ridgeway Avenue, biking the neighborhood to Whitmore and Marilla Parks, honing his basketball and baseball skills. Voted “best-looking” in high school, he was a star baseball pitcher and carried his charm to the campus of WVU. A member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism. Following graduation, Craig moved to Charleston in 1968 and began working for the newspaper in the advertising department.
During his forty-five-year career with Charleston Newspapers and the Daily Gazette Company, Craig held numerous positions, including Personnel Director, Assistant General Manager, Publisher and Executive Editor of the Charleston Gazette, and President and General Manager of Charleston Newspapers.
Craig served on the boards of the Charleston Chamber of Commerce, West Virginia Press Association, Fund for the Arts, and the YMCA. He also acted as board member and president of the Southern Newspaper Press Association. He attended the Executive Leadership Program at Stanford and was extremely proud of his career in the newspaper business.
Early on in Charleston, Craig played basketball in the Charleston Businessmen Basketball League at Old Charleston High. When he became too much of an “old man” to play basketball, he moved on to golf. He was a devoted golfer, spending hours upon hours at Berry Hills Country Club trying to achieve a longer drive. Craig was known to say, “I’m not as good at golf as I think I am.” He was an ardent skier, a cookie lover, and a wine and vodka aficionado. He loved his semiannual golf trips to Canaan Valley, his daily visits to the YMCA, and his annual beach trips to Sunset Beach, NC where he perfected his tan. As a WVU sports enthusiast, Craig maintained season tickets to both basketball and football games. An avid reader and sport statistician, he devoured John Grisham and James Patterson novels while knowing every Trivial Pursuit sports question in the deck. Craig was also in the minority of people who still dressed to fly.
Craig was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Sarah Selby, and his beloved dog, Maggie. He was very proud that he trained Maggie to gently retrieve his paper from the driveway each morning.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sue; his two children, Crista Reed of Flower Mound, TX (husband Doug, daughter Emily) and Allyson Fox of Mountain Brook, AL (husband Bill, daughter Margaret, sons Will and Henry); his brother David of San Luis Obispo, CA (wife Chip, son Jamison, daughters Brooke and Amanda), brother-in-law George O’Malley of Charleston, WV (wife Jamie); and his best friend of 73 years, Clete Smith, of Pittsburgh, PA.
A gathering to Honor the Life of Craig will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon, Friday, February 24, 2023 at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston.
A reception will follow at the Berry Hills Country Club, from 12:30 p.m.to 2:30 p.m.
The family would like to extend special thanks and unending gratitude to his caregivers: Rose Hughes, Karen Igo, and Pam and Stacy Jarrett, for their devoted, kind, and compassionate care at the end of his life.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the WVU Foundation (www.WVUF.org) or the Charleston YMCA (http://ymcaofkv.org/donate/).
