Joanna I. Tabit
Judge Joanna Tabit, 62, of Charleston, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on September 29, 2023.
Known for her brilliant mind, infectious smile, and positive energy, Joanna loved people and they loved her. Each time you saw her, you left feeling better. She had many friends of all ages and from all walks of life. In her honor, we are all called to fight for justice, mentor others, recognize every person’s worth, and make each other laugh and love big.
Born in Montgomery, WV, on March 15, 1961, Joanna attended Sacred Heart Grade School and graduated from Charleston Catholic High School in 1979. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Marshall University in 1983 and her law degree from West Virginia University College of Law in 1986. While an undergraduate student at Marshall University, she served as President of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She loved all her alma maters – Charleston Catholic High School, Marshall University, and West Virginia University.
As Kanawha Circuit Judge, she strove to carry out her mission as mentor to young lawyers, which she believed was one of the most critical components to their success. She also mentored aspiring lawyers during her career as a public and private practitioner and as an Adjunct Lecturer, teaching Summer Appellate Advocacy for the WVU College of Law.
She began her legal career in 1986 as a law clerk, to former Supreme Court Justice Thomas E. McHugh. Following her clerkship, she served as an Assistant, and then as Deputy Attorney General, of the Appellate Division in the Office of the Attorney General, from 1989 to 1992, under the administrations of Attorneys General Roger Tompkins and Mario Palumbo. In 1992, she joined the law firm of Steptoe & Johnson, where she was a partner until October 2014, when she was appointed to the bench.
She was active in professional and civic organizations. Among other things, she served as Co-Chairman of the Campaign for Legal Aid of West Virginia; served on the Board of Directors for the YWCA of Charleston; chaired the Access to Justice Foundation; served as a member of the Board of Governors of the West Virginia State Bar; and served as a Commissioner on the City of Charleston Human Rights Commission.
She was chairwoman of the Mass Litigation Panel, a member of the Juvenile Justice Commission, and a former member of the Business Court Division. She was also Presiding Judge over the Juvenile Drug Court and the Family Treatment Court.
While in private practice, she was rated an AV lawyer by Martindale Hubbell and recognized by Chambers USA as a Leader in the Field, with a specialty in commercial litigation. In 2009, she received the “Outstanding Private Practice Attorney” award, presented by the Women’s Law Caucus at WVU College of Law. She also was recognized as “Charleston’s Finest” by the Kentucky/West Virginia chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for her charitable work for the organization; and, in 2017 was a YWCA Women of Achievement honoree.
Joanna was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Gloria Tabit, and her niece, Hallie Tabit Johnson.
She is survived by sisters, Diana White and Annette Reynolds. Although she loved her sisters dearly, her nephews, Craig Tabit and Jeff Reynolds, were unquestionably the lights of her life.
Joanna leaves behind a host of family and friends who were fortunate to have been touched by her presence in their lives.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, October 6, 2023, at the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Charleston, with Monsignor P. Edward Sadie and Father Donald X. Higgs officiating. Private family entombment services will follow at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Charleston. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 P.M., Thursday, October 5, 2023, at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday, October 6, 2023. The funeral service will also be live-streamed. It will be available on the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart’s Facebook video page: Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart | Facebook.
Joanna had a special place in her heart for youth. She saw the importance of helping to secure their future, and ours. Not surprisingly, Joanna’s connections with young people through the Juvenile Drug Court showed her determination to provide youth with direction, support, and realistic hopes for positive futures. As a talented athlete herself during her formative years, it is not surprising to learn that Joanna’s encouraging spirit was deeply felt by Charleston Catholic High School students through her faithful, enthusiastic attendance at their sports competitions and other events. In order to continue her work and passion, two memorial funds have been established. The family asks that those who are able, in lieu of flowers, to consider donating to continue Joanna’s work with the Juvenile Drug Court administered by the WV Supreme Court of Appeals, or to scholarship support for students and athletics at Charleston Catholic High School. Donations can be made through the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation. Send contributions payable to TGKVF, PO Box 3041, Charleston, WV 25331, or visit www.tgkvf.org. Please designate your contribution for support of Juvenile Drug Court or Charleston Catholic High School scholarships.

To say my beloved Judge Tabit was a mentor, friend and absolute force in my life, is an understatement. She was a co-honoree with me of the YWCA Women of Achievement/Empowerment Award. We often joked because I was honored a few years before her. She was someone I looked up to and admired to the fullest. It shatters my heart to know this world will go on without her, but gives me peace to know she has touched so many and left a legacy that will forever be remembered. Thank you, your Honor, for making me believe in myself and for believing in me when no one else did! Your strength was absolutely amazing! To her family, I am deeply sorry she is not here with you anymore in her physical body, but know she lives on in the hearts of so many!! You will be missed and never forgotten❤️
A beautiful soul taken too soon. She was the best of the best and I will always remember our days of fun and laughter at S&J. Fly high my friend.
What a remarkable human being. She made everyone feel like they were her best friend. She was a gift from God to us and she was taken back too soon. God made only one Joanna Tabit and broke the mold after that. I never met anyone else that had the gifted personality that she had. I will forever miss her wonderful smile and the heartwarming friendship that she showed to me. Rest in peace my dear friend. You were taken from us too soon.
Judge Tabit epitomized all it is to be a judge: organized, compassionate, fair, organized, and resourceful. More importantly, she always gave back to her community, whether through her work with juveniles, mentoring young lawyers, participating in community events, and cheering on her beloved Herd AND the Mountaineers (truly the mark of a fair judge)
She was always witty and generous with her time and discussion. Although I never practiced before her, I attended social gatherings with her. She was an enthusiastic person, witty and self-deprecating, did not have “judge’s disease,” and always remembered those less fortunate than her.
Her loss is a loss not only to the Judiciary, but to the litigants whom she always treated fairly and with respect, and to the young lawyers, who will not be able to experience and guidance.
A good friend and law partner who made an indelible mark on the community. She will be greatly missed.
Joanna was very kind to all. I remember that, when my daughter (Kelly) played basketball for Notre Dame High School, ND played Charleston Catholic every year home and away. When at CC, Joanna would always come to the game, cheer for Kelly (though hoping that CC would win), stay after the game and then give Kelly a big hug. She was always so complimentary and was just a very positive person. As the obit provides, Joanna made us feel better after we spent time with her. Joanna’s loss is such a tragedy, but we are all better people for having known her.
Judge Tabit was the best person ever and just an all-around great human who I was lucky to have worked with for over 4 years. She was such a great Judge and stood firm to what she believed in and tried to help those that needed it. She will be missed by so many, but her memory will live on for years to come. The world was definitely a better place because of her 🙁
Judge Tabit will be so missed! I have to thank her for so many things but especially the protection she afforded me and my kids. She was looking out for people the best way she could and that was from behind the bench. I always had an admiration for her but seeing her in action and the actual care she showed from a place of power was incredible. I never saw her without feeling her compassion and strength. Rest in peace dear lady!
Judge Tabit was there for me when my daughter was addicted. She went out of her way to reassure me that I was doing the right thing for my child . My daughter is clean & sober & recently had a beautiful daughter of her own. I have never forgotten Judge Tabit & what a caring person she was.
To the Tabit Family & Friends, please accept our condolences on Joanna’s passing. God be with her this day and God Bless you.
Such a genuine, kind and good person! Truly one of the best human beings I’ve had the pleasure to know! I don’t know of a higher compliment I could give to anyone than that.
I miss her greatly!
Sending my condolences – Joanna was a wonderful person and she will be forever missed. I loved seeing her at the pharmacy when she came back to say hello – she absolutely did make you feel better just by being near.
To the Tabit family,
We offer our deepest condolences on the passing of Judge Joanna Tabit. We extend our prayers for this loss felt by family, the legal community, and the community as a whole.

Joanna Tabit was someone I will never forget. She was a very kind, just, decent, and extremely wise woman and judge.
My daughters and I are truly blessed to have met her.
She was beyond exceptional in her role as judge and she was, in my opinion, at the very “top of her class”.
My daughters and I are so very thankful to God for her and we will never forget her and her truly beautiful spirit.
May she forever rest in the peace the Lord Jesus.
James, Tehillah, and Emunah
Always enjoyed being around her. A great and incredible spirit. A all around beautiful person.
To the Joanna Tabit Family:
It is with sadness yet with the eternal hope of the Resurrection that we note the passing of your beloved Joanna into God’s Heavenly Kingdom. Every encounter that I had with her brought a beautiful smile and a loving manner. She was an outstanding representative of the Lebanese-Americans in the Kanawha Valley and will be greatly missed. Please know that you are in our prayers, and may the Peace of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ continue to sustain and uplift you during this time. As we pray in the Orthodox Christian tradition: “With the saints, O Christ, give rest to Thy servant, Joanna, in that place of brightness, that place of verdure, that place of repose, where there is neither sickness, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but life everlasting.”
In Christ,
V. Rev. Fr. Olof Scott, Dean Emeritus, St. George Orthodox Cathedral, Charleston, WV
I had the pleasure of working with Joanna one summer when she was between college and law school doing door-to-door canvassing on environmental issues. Fast forward to years later and she headed up the Campaign for Legal Aid, working with my organization to ensure that low-income and vulnerable West Virginians had equal access to justice. Genuine, funny and with a true heart for justice, she was a treasure…and will be much missed. All the best to her family.

Diana and Annette – The feelings of loss you and your families are feeling are unimaginable. I have not met anyone like your sister. As echoed in every tribute, post and condolence, Joanna genuinely let everyone she met know they were the most important person in her room. Unselfish and giving to a fault, anyone who was fortunate enough to have ever been in her presence is truly blessed. I loved her tons. Going to miss my “Lebanese Cousin”.
To the Tabit Family: Thank you for your beautiful visitation and funeral services for Joanna. As I know you already know, Joanna made this world a better place and she will always be remembered with love. She truly walked the walk…and usually with good humor and a smile. Whenever faced with a challenging person or situation, I will try to remember her example.
