Gloria J. Boxley-Brown

Mrs. Gloria Jean Boxley-Brown, 75 y/o of Charleston, WV passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026 and welcomed into heaven by God’s grace.  She was born to the late James and Sarah E. Boxley, in Charleston, WV on July 2, 1950.

She married her best friend Timothy G. Brown “Love of My Life” 23+ years ago in Charleston, WV.  She raised (5) children with patience, unconditional love, kindness, a fun loving spirit as a Mom who wanted the best for her children, she was extremely caring, and most of all had a unique “smile” as Granny Glo to all her grandkids/great-grandchildren.  She was a poet/ songstress at heart, always working on her next masterpiece, kind, funny, smart, and always ready to challenge the family with trivia prizes.  She will be dearly missed by all her loved ones, forever in our hearts, and celebrated as the goodness that is in each of us as her loved ones.

She worked as a teachers aide at the CAMC Lighthouse Daycare, with children as her lifelong passion.  At an early age she was someone who took to childcare, passed this onto “Daton” and enjoyed the role of “Mother” because she was a nurturer at heart.  She graduated with her GED from Garnet Career Center, attended the (OIC) Opportunities Industrialization Center, and received her aide training at Ben Franklin Career Center.  She was a beautiful soul, whether she was up or down she always had a smile, a roll of the “eyes”, or quiet word of encouragement.

Known above all for her “can do” attitude, she enjoyed sitting on the porch with Tim welcoming family/friends with a little sip of “bubbles” in her fancy glasses, and smoking a cigarette during the warm spring/summer nights.  Getting together for BBQ’s, welcoming family/friends from out of town, and listening to smooth grooves/Usher/R. Kelly and that “brown liquor” music with Tim.  Watching the grandkids playing in the yard over the years, playing cards, loving on her family, watching her brothers “Brotha/Paul/Dooney” play sports in their youth, gossiping/shopping for a deal with her sis’ Shirley and enjoying life with her “boo” Tim were their own special moments of enjoying a beautiful life.

As a TV watcher she’d be laid back on the couch in her pjs with the remote, calling Tim while he watched the Dallas Cowboys, enjoying her B/W cowboy shows, or her most recent “action” series with sons Stephen/Myone “nodding off”:). She was definitely a determined woman who worked hard, had class, exemplified selflessness, feisty at times, enjoyed traveling with a passion with daughter “Stephanie”, a best friend, a good listener for son “Reyeal”, loved her some Wertz Avenue, and was always the best “Mom and Friend” to her five children.

Lastly, she is survived by her eldest daughter Annesheia (Andre) Jones, daughter Dr. Daton Dean, eldest son Stephen Boxley, son Myone (Latasha) Boxley, and son Reyeal. Grandchildren T’Andre Boxley, T’Jaysia English, T’Ayon English, Jaden Edwards, T’Alayah Boxley, Niyana Jackson, Brooklyn Boxley, (4) beautiful great grandchildren: T’ianni Boxley, T’iarri Bays, Makari Bays, and T’alyia Boxley. Siblings James (Johnna) Boxley, Paul (Priscilla) Boxley, and Shirley Smith, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her husband Timothy G. Brown, her brother Robert Boxley, and both of her parents.

Because she was our guiding light “Glo”, our footsteps in the sand (or over the bridge) will forever be blessed by the example we have in you “Mom” and a lifetime of loving memories.  Living life to it’s fullest, smiling every step of the way”, always the example “Love” in action, and knowing that your love for each of us is “Timeless”….

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday April 28, 2026 at Snodgrass Funeral Home at 12noon for service, and a public viewing at 11am.

Online condolences and memories may be shared by visiting www.snodgrassfuneral.com and selecting the obituary. Arrangements are in care of Snodgrass Funeral Home.

Charles "Steve" Stevenson Hyre

On April 17, Charles (Steve) Stevenson Hyre passed away peacefully in his home after a long illness. He was two days shy of his 79th birthday.

A blue-eyed charmer, Steve had an irrepressible love of life, taking extraordinary joy in time spent with family and friends, good food of all kinds (though we could debate how “good” potted meat really is), music and art, great books, and a warm day sitting in the sunshine. He was well-known for his sharp intellect, playful humor, immense curiosity, and quick wit. A beloved father, grandfather, brother, friend, and mentor to many, he is deeply loved and already profoundly missed.

Steve was born in the tiny mountain town of Circleville, West Virginia. At a young age, he was introduced to the magic of music and entertaining. Steve saved money from his paper route to buy his first guitar - a classic Kay that he would pick up throughout his whole life. Some of his daughters’ earliest memories are of him playing old folk songs or singing sweet melodies he wrote just for them.

An ambitious student and voracious reader, Steve was a first-generation college graduate, earning a scholarship to attend Shepherd College and later Coppin State for his Masters and PhD work. He studied education, cementing a path to some of his most meaningful professional experiences.

Through his work at Appalachian Educational Laboratory, Steve found incredible fulfillment sharing new models of experiential learning that addressed systemic inequities. Steve became an early adopter and believer in the power of technology, eventually founding a hardware company. He later pivoted to software development and sales.

Steve was a one-of-a-kind character: a brilliant mind with a goofy demeanor and a deeply creative soul. He was an educator, researcher, programmer, and philosopher. He delighted in times shared with friends and fostered a lifelong commitment to his progressive ideals. He is survived by his beloved daughters Christina (Marc) and Stephanie (John) and his adored grandsons, Jack and Benny Charles. He is also survived by his dear brother Thomas (Kathy), his extended family, and all the friends he amassed during a life lived to the fullest. He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Gordon Hyre, his mother, Mary Grace Nelson Hyre, and his ex-wife turned best friend Ann Winn Childs Hyre.

For those who want to honor Steve’s memory, his family asks that donations be made in his name to the Kanawha Valley Fellowship Home (https://kvfh.org/donate.php) or Kanawha Valley Hospice Care (https://www.hospicecarewv.org/make-a-donation/). A Celebration of Life will be planned for later this summer.

She was born June 3, 1929, in Sistersville, West Virginia, to David Dewey Sutton and Mary Goldsmith Sutton, and was raised in Sistersville, WV.

Many of these pieces were donated to charitable fundraising events around WV. In her younger years, she enjoyed riding horses, snow skiing in Canaan Valley, as well as canoeing and kayaking along the Greenbrier River. She was also active with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra in the 1970s, and volunteered her time to various organizations.

Mary will be remembered as a reserved woman of strong character and generosity, with a sharp eye for detail and a firm, no-nonsense nature. They remember her steady presence and playful banter. Mary’s generosity extended beyond her family as she quietly supported numerous charitable organizations over the years.
