William "Bill" Peters

William “Bill” Graves Peters II, 79, of South Charleston passed away on September 9th, 2023.

Bill graduated from South Charleston High School. He was retired from the WV State Tax Revenue, and IBM as a computer programmer. He was also a former employee of the Capitol City Auto Auction as a driver shortly after retirement because, if you knew him, you know he did not like to sit still. He loved to drive, he loved his boat, and he loved his family. He was a father figure to many, and a ‘Poppy’ to many more. He will forever be loved, remembered, and missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Blanche Peters; sister, Betty Peters (White); as well as his ex-wife and friend, Carolynne Peters.

He is survived by his daughter and caretaker, Stacey Peters; granddaughter, Darienne King (Benjamin; great granddaughter, Poppy Lynne King; sons, Donald Peters (Nancy) and Robert Peters (Heather).

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 3:00 pm, Thursday, September 14, 2023 at Snodgrass Funeral Home in South Charleston, West Virginia. Family and friends may visit from 2:00pm-3:00pm at the funeral home.

Carolyn Sue Smith

Carolyn Sue Smith, age 78, of Charleston peacefully passed away, surrounded by family on Friday September 1, 2023 at Hubbard Hospice House after an extended illness.

She was born on December 18, 1944 in Charleston, daughter of the late Fred and Mary Adkins Whittaker.  She is also preceded in death by her husband Opie E. Smith, Sr.; sisters, Linda Ferrell and Elizabeth Kelly; brother in law, George Ferrell, Sr.

Carolyn attended Charleston High School and later earned her Certified Nursing Assistant certificate.  She was a CNA at St. Francis Hospital for more than 20 years caring for others, like she always did.  Later she was a local business owner and manager where she became “Mom” to everyone she met.

She taught everyone about courage, kindness, hard work, helping others, but most importantly about strength; she exercised that strength throughout her extended illness. Carolyn placed so many above herself and cared for family members, friends, and others; especially when others had no option.  She loved us all and had special places in her heart for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  It was her nature to always see the value in everyone and never give up on people.

Carolyn is survived by her two sons, Opie E. Smith, Jr. of Charleston, and William L. Smith of Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Kim Swiney (Ben) of Clendenin, Opie E. Smith, III, (Devan) of Charleston; chosen grandson Xavier Blackledge; great grandchildren, Sophie, Madi, Zach, Gracie, Ella, and Athena; brother, Denver Whittaker (Susie); sisters, Vicki Starcher and Nikla Hardman; nephew, Opie Lee Kelly who was like her third son; chosen son Zane Blackledge (Lauren) and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A service to honor Carolyn’s life will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday September 6, 2023 at Snodgrass Funeral Home with Pastor Charles Swiney officiating.  Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston, WV.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Rosalie Gay Estep Medley

Rosalie Gay Estep Medley, 88, of South Charleston, passed away on August 28, 2023, at Hubbard Hospice House West.

She was born in Powelton, WV, to the late Homer and Georgia Legg Estep. She was a homemaker and cared for her family very deeply. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and embroidering. Rosalie was a member of First Church of God on Ohio Street in South Charleston, where she loved to sing in the choir and fellowship with her church family.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Gail Medley; sister, Patsy Board; brother, Steve Estep.

Rosalie is survived by her four children, Jerry (Vickie) Medley of Hurricane, WV, Mark Medley of Charleston, WV, Stephanie Dotson of South Charleston, WV and Greg (Brandi) Medley of Nitro, WV; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren.

A service to Honor the Life of Rosalie Medley will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, September 1, 2023 at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston with Pastor Charles Shelton officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Richard Thomas Anderson

Richard Thomas Anderson, age 38, of South Charleston went to his eternal heavenly home, with his mother and close friends by his side, on Sunday August 27, 2023 at CAMC General Hospital.

Richard was born in Charleston, March14, 1985, son of the late Robert T. Anderson, Sr.  He is also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Carl Hampton Wills, Sr. and Ann Greathouse Wills; paternal grandparents, Andy Anderson and Dorothy Davis Anderson.

Richard was born with a life of many physical and intellectual challenges, however through that he was able to have a life of enjoyment and loved by many.  One of his enjoyments was his father’s daily rides in a golf cart at Kanawha Country Club and his family taking him to South Charleston parades and festivals.

Richard loved music, church, eating good food, his home and celebrating special events.

Richard is survived by his mother, Treisa Anderson of South Charleston; brothers, Robbie Anderson, Sr. (Blaire) of Charleston, and Paul Anderson (Erin) of South Charleston; uncle, Carl H. Wills, Jr. of Charleston; aunt, Carol Hill of Ohio.

The family greatly appreciated Richard’s long time health care providers, Walter Dawkins and Maria Marotto.  Also, a special thanks to McKinney Family Chiropractic and staff and CAMC General Neuroscience Unit.

A service to celebrate Richard’s homegoing will be held at 7:00 pm on Friday September 1, 2023 at Snodgrass Funeral Home with Pastor James Wright officiating.  Interment services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday September 2, 2023 at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday evening at the funeral.

William Carl "Bill" Dotson, Jr.

William Carl "Bill" Dotson, Jr., age 88, passed away on August 25, 2023, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington. Born on October 8, 1934, in Bownemont, WV, to William Carl Dotson and Pearl Mae Evans, he graduated from South Charleston High School in 1952.

He attended West Virginia University, was part of the Pride of West Virginia Marching Band, and a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. He eventually graduated from West Virginia Institute of Technology, where he continued his involvement in the marching band.

Bill's career was in the automotive industry, working for American Motors Corporation and later Chrysler Corporation as an Executive Sales Manager in Detroit, Michigan. He had a fondness for playing musical instruments, particularly the euphonium and tuba. He was engaged with various community bands in Michigan, West Virginia, and Florida, and Senior Moments Dixieland Jazz.

Bill achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America and remained involved as a Scout Master and mentor. He also served his country for three years in the United States Army.

He was predeceased by his parents and his first wife, Carolyn Jean Evans, after 53 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Norma Dotson; his son, Peter Dotson (Annette); and daughters, Patrica Woll (Timothy), Carol Huber, and Nancy Ryan (Richard); 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. His cherished companions included Gracie the dog and Bailey the cat.

A Service to Honor the Life of William Dotson is scheduled for August 31, 2023, at 1 pm at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston. Officiated by Pastors Scott Bandy and Ray Witmer III, the service will be followed by entombment at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. A visitation window will be open from 12 pm to 1 pm on the same day.

Patricia Lou Fields

Patricia Lou Fields, 76, of South Charleston, passed way on August 17, 2023, at HospiceCare at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

She was born on July 22, 1947, in Charleston, WV, to the late John G. Perkins and Betty L. Perkins. She was a proud member of the Charleston High School class of 1965 and the Marshall University class of 1969.

Patsy was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Patrick Paxton.  She is survived by her husband of 54 years, A.J. Fields; sons, Will (wife Tina) of Covington, VA, and Andy (wife Cecilia) of New Bern, NC; granddaughters, Caitlin and Grace Fields of Covington, VA, Xazil Johnson of Oak Island, NC, and Andrea Garvey of Charlotte, NC; grandson, Giovanni Triana of Charlotte, NC; brother, John R. Perkins (wife Sally) of Charleston, WV; sister, Polly Paxton of Jefferson, IN; brother, David Perkins (wife Holly) of Harpers Ferry, WV; brother-in-law, Thomas Fields (wife Ann) of Charlottesville, VA; three greatgrandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Abby.

A private service to Honor the Life of Patsy will be held at a later date.

Barbara June Addis Merritt

Barbara June Addis Merritt, 86, of South Charleston, passed away on August 9, 2023.

She was born on May 22, 1937, to the late Carroll W. and Leona June Pringle Addis in South Charleston, where she resided most of her life.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Mike Merritt; brothers, Don and Phillip Addis; sister, Betty Kitchen; and niece, Rose Kitchen.

Barbara is survived by her niece, Judy Richards; and nephews, Phillip and Steven Addis.

A private family graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston, where she will be interred beside her son, Mike.

Angela Dawn Price

Angela Dawn Price, 45, of South Charleston, WV, passed away on August 14, 2023, at CAMC Memorial.

Angela was born on May 10, 1978, to the late Charles Price and Margaret Harris Price. She grew up in Spencer, WV, and graduated from Roane County High School, class of 1996.

Angela had a heart of gold and was a very giving person. Her personality was sassy, ornery, and she wasn’t happy unless she was picking on someone! Angela enjoyed spending time with family and friends, loved taking drives, and listening to music. She also loved skating, softball, drawing, movies, and farm animals (except chickens!). During football season, she cheered on her Cowboys and loved picking on her son, a Saints fan!

Angela was preceded in death by her father, Charles Price; mother, Margaret Harris Price; and sister, Brenda Price. She is survived by her fiancé, Tim Spencer; daughter, Brooke Anderson; son, Aidan Anderson; brother and sister-in-law, Bub and Dee Dee Price; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Jeffrey Patrick; nephews: Jason, Damon, and Chris Price, Alex White, and Benny King; nieces: Margaret King, Brenda Walker, Alexis and Kailae King; several close cousins, friends, and fur babies.

Benny J. Argento, Sr.

Benny J. Argento, Sr., 87, of South Charleston, WV, passed away on August 9, 2023 after a long illness.

Benny was born March 16, 1936 in Harewood, WV. He was a graduate of South Charleston High School, attended Morris Harvey College, and Graduated from West Virginia State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry.

Benny was a scientist who spent 40 years working in R&D, and product development, for Union Carbide, Bayer, and ARCO Chemical. He held several US patents and received awards in the field of polyurethanes and foams.

He was active in the community, coaching little league baseball and YMCA basketball. He was on the Scout Committee for Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop 242. He was also a volunteer chemistry tutor and a partner in the Rock Lake Community Life Center. Benny was an Elder at Rock Lake Presbyterian Church where he had been a member for 60 years.

Benny was also an avid aviationist.   He served in the United States Air Force, was a private pilot, and owned and operated his own planes out of Mallory Airport in South Charleston.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Argento and Ernie and Lillian Chieves; sisters, Linda Kersey and Darlene Bayes.

Benny is survived by his wife of 67 years, Donie; son, John Argento (Debbie) and grandchildren, Katrina (Josh), Benny, and Victoria, of North Carolina, and son, Scott Argento (Teresa) and grandchildren, Sarah and Nathan, of South Charleston; brother-in-law, Rick Bayes.

A service to Honor the Life of Benny will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, August 19, 2023 in Cunningham Memorial Park Upper Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. Dr. Patricia Jarvis officiating. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Friday, August 18, 2023 at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston.

Dennis Adkins

Dennis Adkins, Sr., 80 of Charleston passed away on August 10, 2023.  Dennis was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on June 6, 1943, to Nolan and Thelma (Spurlock) Adkins.  At the age of two, his family moved to Huntington, West Virginia.  He attended Barboursville High School, where he lettered in football, basketball and track and graduated in 1961, before going on to Marshall University.

After leaving Marshall, he went to work for WSAZ TV.  In 1968, he was drafted into the U.S. Army.  He was assigned to the Armed Forces Radio and Television for the Southern Command Network in the Canal Zone, Panama.  During his service with Armed Forces Radio, he met the love of his life, Norma Vargas.  After being discharged from the Army in 1971, he was employed by WCHS TV, Charleston, he worked his way from sales manager to president and general manager.  During his tenure as general manager, he acquired property and built the current location of WCHS.  Dennis retired in 1998 but in November 2003, he came out of retirement and went back into broadcasting and moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, as general manager for KREX.  He returned to Charleston in 2007 and was appointed executive director of WVPBS by then Governor Manchin.  He ended his extensive career in broadcasting working for his long-time personal friend and broadcasting colleague, Robbie Thomas, as general manager at WOAY.  He retired from broadcasting in 2013.  In October 2016 he was inducted into the West Virginia Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

After his military service ended, Dennis and Norma married on December 5, 1970.  They built their life together in Charleston and had two children.  Dennis was an avid fan of the Herd, Mountaineers and Cincinnati Reds.  His hobbies included golfing, fishing, and NASCAR racing.  He thoroughly enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and was so proud of them.

Anyone who knew Dennis knew he was always the life of the party with his quick wit and his ability to tell a joke and make people laugh.  He was a sensitive and compassionate man.  To know him was to love him.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Nolan and Thelma Adkins, and his brother, C. Lee Adkins.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Norma; son, Dennis Adkins, Jr. (Billie Jo) and daughter, Kelsey Adkins; grandchildren, Tristan, Casey, Rylan and Brooklyn; and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.

A service will be held at St. Timothy Lutheran church, Charleston, on Friday, August 18th, 2023, at 11 a.m.  with Pastor Jamie Strickler officiating.  Service will be livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page.  Burial will follow at Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Cemetery, 130 Academy Drive, Dunbar.  Visitation will be at the church on Thursday, August 17th, 2023, from 6 to 8 p.m.
