Richard Lee Burgy

Richard Lee Burgy, 91, passed away peacefully at home on July 24, 2026. All his family and friends called him Dick. He was a faithful member of Blessed Sacrament Church. Richard graduated from South Charleston High School in 1953. He began working as a teenager at his father’s gas station Mound Essa in South Charleston.

He soon became an employee of FMC as a welder where he worked until retirement. Richard had a strong work ethic and was proud of his accomplishments. His favorite thing to do was working in his garage making a variety of things out of wood and metal to give away to his family and friends.

Preceding him were his parents, John and Francis Burgy, and his brother John Jr. and wife Helen. Father and mother-in-law Hank and Angie Schmidt. Brother-in-law and wife Lawrance and Carolyn Schmidt. Son-In-Law Doug Stover.

Even though he will be greatly missed, his family has wonderful memories of times spent together from watching his boys play sports, to family camping trips, deer hunting and traveling with his wife. He left behind his wife of 73 years, Barbara; sons, George and his wife Jane. Gerald and his wife Teresa; and daughter, Pam Stover. His grandchildren, Joseph Burgy and his wife Jessica, Julie Francis and her husband Michael, Diana Cole and her husband Mitch along with 7 great grandchildren; Emerson and Maddie Burgy, Peyton, Josie, and Addie Francis, Annabeth and Zackary Cole; Nephew’s Larry and Jim Schmidt, Eric and Wes Burgy.

There will be a Funeral Mass to Honor the Life of Richard at 12:00 Noon, Monday, August 3, 2026 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in South Charleston with Father John Finnell officiating. Friends may visit from 11:00 am until service time. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.
