William Edward “Bill” Crockett, 92, of Charleston, formerly of St. Albans, passed away August 22, 2026, with his son and daughter at his side. He was without pain, and he knew he was surrounded by love.

Born July 27, 1934, to the late Warner and Esther Crockett, Bill was raised in Greensboro, southwestern Pennsylvania, so it was natural that he would go to college at WVU. He received his BSChE in 1956, his MSChE in 1958, and his PhD in 1962. He was elected to Omega Chi Epsilon, Phi Lambda Upsilon, Sigma Gamma Epsilon, Sigma Chi and Tau Beta Pi. It was at WVU that he met Maureen “Bunny” Fitzpatrick. On their third date, he asked her to marry him, and six months later, June 10, 1957, they were married. While at WVU, Bill worked part time at the U.S. Bureau of Mines and taught chemical engineering courses as an instructor and an assistant professor. Bill finished his PhD in Chemical Engineering while Bunny finished her Masters in English Literature, and in 1962, they moved to Wappingers Falls, NY, and Bill started work as a senior chemical engineer at the Texaco Research Center in Beacon, NY. While there, he also taught math courses at Marist College part time. Bill was not yet Catholic, but he and Bunny were both active in the Christian Family Movement. Their daughter Margaret “Peg” was born in 1959, and their son Ken was born in 1966. When daughter Peg had her first communion, Bill became Catholic, and had his own first communion beside his daughter. Bill and Bunny also started to foster children through CFM. Through Fr. Jude Mili, Bill and Bunny were connected to the Franciscans at Graymoor Friary and the Marist Brothers at Marist College, and when Fr. Jude transferred to Good Council Friary in Morgantown, WV, they would take their two children to WV and spend a few weeks every summer doing volunteer work from the Friary. In 1969, they moved to St. Albans, WV when Bill was invited to teach at what was then WVU’s Kanawha Valley Graduate Center in Institute. In 1977, he became the Dean of Engineering and Science for the autonomous College of Graduate Studies, now associated with Marshall University. He has served terms as vice president and president of the Charleston Section of the AIChE.

Bill was active with Catholic Community Services, Catholic Charities, and the Charleston Chamber Music Association. Bill and Bunny together taught C.C.D. and led adult classes at St. Francis Parish in St. Albans.

Bill and Bunny were both avid naturalists and travelers, and often spent weekends (and sometimes weeks) touring WV, US, and various international natural landmarks, historical, and protected sites.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Margaret “Peg” Nagem of St. Albans, son Kenneth (Hideko) Crockett of Japan, and beloved grandchildren: Angela Maureen (Kurt) Zollman of Shenandoah Junction, WV, Jerry Crockett of Pittsburgh, PA, Joh Crockett of Japan, and Kai Crockett of Japan. Bill is also survived by his brother Tom (Deborah) Crockett of Donora PA.

To thank God for Bill’s life, friends and family are invited to come to Blessed Sacrament Parish in South Charleston for visitation at 10:30am on Thursday, August 27th, immediately followed by the funeral Mass at 11:30. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Catholic Charities, Amnesty International, or the charity if your choice.
