It is with great sadness that we share that William Earlie Flynt, III, affectionately known as Bill, passed away on August 25, 2026.

Bill was born July 14, 1948, in Wheeling, WV, to William Flynt, Jr. and Ida Opal Matthews Flynt. He grew up in Charleston, WV, and graduated from Charleston High School. On May 3, 1968, Bill entered the U.S. Air Force, proudly serving his country as a munitions specialist across multiple stations, including Guam and Thailand. His years of military service profoundly shaped his life, and he regularly shared rich, memorable stories from those times. Upon returning home, he utilized the GI Bill to graduate from West Virginia State University.

A master craftsman, Bill spent over 40 years as a self-employed carpenter, contractor, and master electrician. Beyond his trades, Bill was a modern-day Renaissance man. His expansive curiosity spanned from the arts and architecture, to deep spirituality. A dedicated practitioner of Buddhism, he brought mindfulness to everything he did, never letting a single day pass without meditation. He was also an avid motorcyclist, photographer, movie buff and sports fanatic. 

Bill considered his friends—and often his clients—part of his inner circle, caring for them as if they were his own family. His intelligent mind, wonderful sense of humor, and compassionate heart will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ann; his stepchildren, Nicholas Mueller, Patrick Herlihy, and Catherine Herlihy; his devoted sister, Donna Lang and her husband Joseph; and his cherished nephews, Keith Lang and Wes Lang, along with Wes’s wife Kat and their sons, Otto and Mack.

A visitation will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Snodgrass Funeral Home in South Charleston, WV, followed by a memorial service at 11 am. An honorary burial of his ashes will be held at the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery in Dunbar, WV.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Bill’s honor to the Valley Woodworkers of West Virginia, 300 12th Street, Dunbar, WV 25064. This organization gave Bill a wonderful outlet for his profound creativity and carpentry skills, while providing a treasured community of colleagues and friends.

The Flynt family extends their deepest appreciation to the dedicated professionals at the VA Administration, Cleveland Clinic, CAMC, and Thomas Hospital for their exemplary and compassionate care in recent years.
