Stephen “Steve” Murray

Stephen “Steve” Rex Murray, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2026, at the age of 76, after an extended illness. Born on February 13, 1950, in Charleston, West Virginia, Steve was the son of Rex and Madge Murray. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Michael Murray, but is lovingly remembered by his wife of 53 years, Sharon, their son Nicholas and his wife Michelle, and his three adored grandchildren, Lilian, Kathryn, and Owen. Steve also leaves behind his nieces, Taryn and Julie, who held a special place in his heart.

 

Steve’s life was marked by a deep commitment to education and community. A proud graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School in 1968, he pursued his passion for teaching by earning his Master’s Degree in Education from Marshall University. For 30 years, Steve dedicated himself to the Kanawha County Schools as a special education teacher, ultimately retiring from Capital High School in 2005. His dedication to his students was unwavering, and he found joy in helping children with disabilities reach their full potential.

 

In addition to his teaching career, Steve was a respected local business owner, operating Watson Picture Framing for over four decades. His commitment to quality service earned him the trust and admiration of the Charleston community. Steve was also a member of Village Chapel Presbyterian Church.

 

Fondly known as “Grampy” to friends and family alike, Steve’s warmth and humor were legendary. He had an innate ability to make everyone feel valued and cherished, often sharing a joke or a lesson with those around him. His selflessness and generosity were evident in every interaction, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives.

 

Steve found immense joy in sharing his love for Charleston with his grandchildren, exploring the city’s hidden gems and imparting its rich history to the next generation. His legacy of learning and love is one that will be cherished by his family forever.

 

A service to celebrate Steve’s life will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Village Chapel Presbyterian Church in Charleston, WV with Rev. Todd Wright officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may visit from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the church.

 

Steve Murray’s life was a testament to the power of love, education, and community. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
