Gloria May Collias

Gloria May Collias, 90, of Charleston, W.Va., passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Irvin and Mildred Morsberger; her sister, LaVerne Thompson; infant son, George Ronald Collias; and ex-husband Manuel Collias.

She is survived by her children, Diane Robbins, Linda (Scott) Sparks, and Gary (Shari) Collias; grandchildren, Justin Robbins, Peyton Collias, and Blake Collias; step grandchildren, Taylor Sparks, and Lauren Sparks; and great granddaughter, Kynzie Robbins.

Gloria was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on January 24, 1934.  She met and married Manuel Collias while he was serving in the Army at Fort Meade, Maryland.  She returned with Manuel to his home in Charleston with their infant son, Gary, in 1958.  Gloria was a wife, mother, and homemaker for many years. She later obtained employment with the W.Va. Alcohol Beverage Control Commission, starting as a cashier in a liquor store and later advancing to be a mainframe computer operator and technician in the ABCC headquarters, a job that she loved.

In 1998, at age 64, Gloria was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.  Her doctors gave her two years to live if she had chemotherapy.  She took chemotherapy, and as a result of those treatments and sheer willpower and determination, she completely overcame the cancer. It never returned.  Her death was from an illness unrelated to cancer.  Through her heroic victory over cancer, she set a courageous example for all who knew and loved her.

Gloria loved, and was loved by, her family.  No words can express the great sense of loss experienced by all who loved her and will forever miss her.
