Reginald “Reggie” Smith
Reginald “Reggie” Smith, 77, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2024, with his beloved wife of 50 years, Sarah (Sally Fish), by his side. He is survived by his two sons, Paul (Carrie) and Matthew (Abigail); and his cherished grandsons, Finn and Reid. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched through his lifelong work as a coach and educator.
Reggie was born and raised in Fayetteville and Gauley Bridge, West Virginia, the first-born son of Reginald and Nelgene Smith. He was preceded in death by his sister, Sherri; and is survived by his brother, Mike, who lives in Michigan with his wife, Tammy.
From an early age, Reggie was a gifted athlete. He was a standout swimmer and guard for West Virginia Tech. Reggie also played drums for City Limits, using his talent to support his education. He loved music and would often point out layers of a track unnoticed by the casual listener. He knew what made a song, an effort, a person, and a team, unique.
After serving honorably in the U.S. Navy, and graduating WVU Tech, he went on to earn a master’s degree in physical education and coaching from West Virginia University.
Reggie’s love for sports and coaching defined much of his life and left an indelible mark on the state of West Virginia. He was the founding coach of the University of Charleston’s women’s soccer program in 1989, and went on to coach at Charleston Catholic, George Washington High School, and WVU Tech. His commitment to developing student athletes extended beyond the field, and his athletes carry forward his lessons of character to this day.
Reggie will be missed by all who knew him, but his memory and teachings will continue to resonate in the lives of his family and the many individuals he coached and mentored.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either the WVU Tech Baisi Athletic Scholarship Fund, #2S430 (WVU Foundation at One Waterfront Place – 7th Floor, P.O. Box 1650, Morgantown, WV 26507-1650, or online at https://give.wvu.edu/ with the designation), or, to the Chef Paul Smith Foundation for hospitality, scholarship fund, and education (Chef Paul Smith Foundation – 40 Norwood Road #7, Charleston, WV 25314).
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Charleston, on Saturday, November 30, 2024, with Rev. Father Donald X. Higgs officiating. Family and friends may visit one hour prior to the Mass.

Reggie helped me get through college. I’m so happy I had him as my advisor. I’ll never forget his kindness and encouragement. He made a difference in my life, as well as many other young students.
We are so sorry for your loss. Our prayers go out to you and your family. May God’s loving arms be around you all at this difficult time. May the Peace of our Lord be with you.

I was so sad to hear about Mr. Reggie’s passing. He was more than just my college counselor—he was one of my biggest supporters during my time at Tech, both on and off the field. I can still remember countless conversations with him, where he genuinely cared about not just my academic success, but my personal well-being too. He always made me feel seen and valued, which was something I needed more than I realized at the time.
Mr. Reggie had this incredible way of making every student feel like they belonged. He never let me doubt my potential, even on the hardest days when juggling soccer, classes, and life felt overwhelming. His encouragement stayed with me long after I graduated. I would always say that he’s one of the reasons I pursued a career in higher education and became a student advisor. I wanted to have the same impact on students that he had on me.
His kindness, his belief in me, and his unwavering support will never be forgotten. He left a legacy of care and compassion that I will carry with me forever.
Paul
My deepest condolences. Reggie was one of those adults in my life who was just “around” and made stuff a little brighter, especially basketball season. He always gave me a crooked grin when he knew I was the recipient of a coach’s criticism. Made it feel not so bad. Good dude. Best to your mom and Matt.
Sally. I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Reggie. I know he has been a wonderful husband, father and mentor. May the Lord wrap his arms around you and your family. Praying 🙏 for you. Your friend Harvey Layne
Sally, I was so sorry to hear of Reggie’s passing. I know you are beyond sorrow at this point. Praying for peace for you and your family and hope that memories will get you through this season without him. I remember when you were just thinking about marriage and how confused and worried you were. We had some good discussions about it. I know you made the right choice and that you have never regretted the good life the two of your built. 50 years was over half of our lifetime and to share it with him had to be special. God bless and keep you and the family. Terry Moschino White
Sally, my condolences to you & family. Been awhile since I have seen you guys, but you will always be in my mind as friends from your stay on Upton Drive.
Peace & love to you.
I’m sorry to hear of Reggie’s passing. We worked together at UC and WVU Tech, and he was an always-pleasant friend. We regularly shared a laugh about his summer selling cars. RIP, Reggie Smith.
No words are adequate to express our sadness upon hearing of Reggie’s passing. He was indeed a special person. From the time we first worked together on the JTPA program and then as colleagues at Tech for most of our career, Reggie’s kindness and smile would brighten any day. Sally, you too brought so much dedication to our college community by serving on many boards with grace and professionalism. Know that you two made such a difference—at Tech and in my life. May God grant you and your family peace and comfort.
Sally:
I am so sorry for you and your Family’s loss. May the Prayers and God comfort all of you. My Heart goes out to you. Reggie was a nice man.
Salt of the earth. The whole family. Treated my son as their own, and everyone with love. Love y’all.
