Patricia “Pat” Joseph

Patricia “Pat” Joseph, 101, of Charleston passed away peacefully at home on March 24, 2026, with her family by her side.

Pat was born October 5, 1924. She was raised in Wheeling, WV and graduated with honors from Wheeling High School in 1942. She received an academic scholarship to Bethany College where she again graduated with honors in 1945. After her employment at Cook-Waite Laboratories, she dedicated her life to her husband of 73 years and to her family. Throughout her life she was actively involved in the United Methodist Church spending her last 50 years as a member of St. Marks where she served as President of the United Methodist women for many years. She was well before her time as she championed the causes of Civil Rights, adult literacy, homelessness, and environmental stewardship. She never wavered in her personal faith, never stopped learning and reading, and found great interest in her ancestry in her later years.

As a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt she showed endless love, compassion, generosity and kindness while instilling the virtues of honesty, fairness, gratitude, and the importance of always doing the right thing. She will be remembered above all for her gentleness and goodness,  and for her constant smile and “thank you” even as she aged gracefully in the face of adversity.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Thomas Ball and Marguerite Genther Ball; her husband, George William Joseph; and her brother, Thomas Cowan Ball.

Pat is survived by her son, Timothy (Gerianne) Joseph of Deerfield, IL; daughters, Rebecca (Stephen) Conner of Alum Creek, WV; Nancy (Robert) Adams of Charlottesville, VA; Janet (David) Clayman of Charleston, WV; three grandsons, Daniel Conner, David (Laura) Conner and Will (Lauren) Joseph; five granddaughters, Amy (Greg) Hannay, Carlin Joseph, Grace (Matt) Rossetti, Elise (Ryan) Maxey and Carinne Adams; three great grandchildren, Claire, Zach and Benjamin Hannay; six nephews, and three nieces.

We are truly grateful for the dedication and kindness shown by Cheryl, Virginia, Anne and Angie.

A service to honor Pat’s life will be held at 11:00 AM, May 2, 2026, at St. Marks United Methodist Church 900 Washington St E. in Charleston. A private inurnment will be held at Graceland Memorial Park in South Charleston, WV.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to St. Marks United Methodist church.
