Maria Anna (Giordano) Kovac

Maria Anna (Giordano) Kovac, 87, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at Brownsburg Health Care Center, Brownsburg, Indiana, after a long illness with Parkinson’s and dementia.  She was born to Domenico and Josephine Marino Giordano on May 30, 1938, in Charleston, West Virginia.  She was a graduate of Charleston High School, Charleston, West Virginia, and then worked at the DuPont Belle Plant, C&P Telephone Company, West Virginia Steel, and then retired from U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Maria was an organist for 20 years at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Charleston, WV.  She was also a member of the Sons of Italy Lodge, Charleston, WV.  She loved to sing and enjoyed performing with the Charleston Light Opera Guild.  After her marriage to Albert Kovac in 1982, she moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan.  She continued with her musical talent there, playing the accordion with the Grand Rapids Accordion Ensemble, performing throughout Grand Rapids, and was organist at the Villa Maria Nunnery.  She attended St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Maria was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Kovac; brother, Domenico Giordano, Jr.; and brother-in-law, Charles Haynes.  Surviving are her four children:  Julie (Dan) Arganbright, Michael Kovac, Toni (Chuck) Beaubien, and Alexa Kovac;  her beloved grandchildren: Nate Arganbright, Stasia Arganbright, Jonah (Skylar) Kovac, Joseph Kovac, Annie Beaubien, Louie Beaubien, Alexander Bruining, Lena (Andrei) Schmuker; great-grandchildren: Jacob Bruining, Keagan Kovac, Kinley Kovac, and Kaylin Kovac; sisters:  Margaret (Doug) Rice, Sr., Avon, Indiana, Caterina (Curt) Quinlan, Cincinnati, Ohio, Patricia Haynes, Newark, Delaware, Wanda (Julius) Byrd, Mooresville, North Carolina; and brother,  Vincent Giordano, Florida.  Maria also leaves many nieces and nephews to mourn her passing.

Maria loved her family dearly and was very proud of her Italian heritage.  She enjoyed singing, playing the piano, organ, and accordion; loved gardening, and grew the best tomatoes.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Brownsburg Health Care Center and Hospice for their excellent care, love, and compassion.  A special thank you to Maria’s nurse, Christine; CNA’s – Kim, Marlow, Bello, and Jazianna, and so many others who took such loving care of Maria.  Also, thank you to St. Malachy Catholic Church volunteers for their weekly rosary/prayer visits.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at the Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 204 Leon Sullivan Way, Charleston, West Virginia, on Friday, August 1, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., with Father Prakash Kerketta officiating.    Entombment will be at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.  Family and friends may visit at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass.
