Josephine “Jo” Hamrick
Josephine “Jo” Lenora Romino Stevens Hamrick was born May 30, 1927 in Fairmont, WV, the first child of Dr. Leonard A. Romino and Maria Antionette “Jeanette” Pacifico Romino. On July 4, 2024, she left this life to be with her Heavenly Father.
Jo was proud of her Italian heritage. Her paternal grandparents, Michael Romino and Josephine LaCamera immigrated from Noepoli, Italy. Her maternal grandparents, James Pacifico and Caroline DelRay immigrated from the Southeastern Province of Benivento, Italy.
Jo loved to entertain and was a gracious hostess, and she thoroughly enjoyed social events of all kinds. Her home reflected her vibrant personality. Jo was always stylishly dressed which often included a stunning hat from her collection. Jo loved life and was a positive person; she approached adversity and challenges with strength and grace and was an inspiration and role model. She took great delight in her family.
While living in Fairmont, Jo worked for her dentist father and other local dentists, and later at Fairmont Clinic and at Fairmont State College. After moving to Charleston WV in 1972, she was the Director of the local Goodwill Industries. She was Charleston General Hospital’s first Patient Advocate, and she retired from the WV Department of Highways. Until her early 90’s, Jo was active in many organizations. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Jo was a member of the Christopher Columbus Italian Club where she served many years as their event/banquet coordinator. She was a past President of the Angel Terrace Garden Club and past Southeastern Director of the WV Garden Clubs. She volunteered at St. Francis Hospital and served as a poll worker.
Jo is predeceased by her husband Dennis R. Hamrick, with whom she enjoyed 23 wonderful years. She is also predeceased by her son John L. Stevens II; brothers Michael and Leonard “Lenny” Romino; sister Patricia “Patti” Vasicek, step-brother Bobby Romino; brother-in-law Tom Janicki and her former husband John L. “Jack” Stevens.
Survivors include her sister Carolyn Romino Janicki; daughter-in-law Kat Stevens; son James L. Stevens (Tara) and their sons John Joseph “Joey” and James Jeffrey “Taylor”; son Joseph L. Stevens (Tina); son Jeffrey L. “Jef” Stevens and his children Megan Pennington (Greg) and son Jacob “Jake” Stevens; former daughter-in-law Kelly Krupa; Great-grandchildren Owen Totten and Gabriel Pennington; brother-in-law Richard Vasicek and sister-in-law Judy Romino Bailey. Aunts Mary Romino and Lee Pacifico also survive, as does step-son Dennis R. Hamrick (Mary Anne) and their sons Paul and Aaron. Jo leaves to cherish her memory many precious nieces, nephews and cousins, each of whom she dearly loved.

Josephine was my mother Madeline Romino Greco’s niece (her dad and my mom were siblings) but Jo and my mom were only a few years apart and even though they grew up like sisters, Jo always called her ‘Aunt Madeline. Throughout the years, they were always there for each other. As they got older, they started getting together with Maryjo for “weekend girl trips” which always sounded like so much fun! Jo was a vibrant presence in my life too and I admired her and tried to visit as often as I could. I’m so happy she was a part of my life. If I had not broken my ankle, I would be at the funeral service. My love and sympathy to all of the family. Sincerely Debbie Greco Catton
A few years ago, Jo’s sister Patti wrote this tribute: “My first memories of life included my being loved by my beautiful loving oldest sister, Jo, who was 16 when I came along. She taught me, spoiled me, encouraged me, comforted me, and so much more. What I learned (admired?) most about her was her strength and resilience in difficult times. God gave her a healthy, healing way to overcome and shine for Him. Her faith kept her facing the wind and never running away, always forgiving, and her life has been full of triumphs, including her extended family, her four sons and wives, grandchildren and great grands. She never missed a step with family. . . keeping up with each of us with love and attention. In addition to her family, she enjoyed successful seasons of work, leadership, volunteering and hosting of gatherings at her home. The peace of God surrounded her; her faith sustained her. She was a blessing.”
I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Jo. I knew her through my friend and her sister, Patti and always saw her as a beautiful and classy woman. Please know I will be keeping the family in prayer.
In Christ,
Candace (Candy White) Calentine
