Joanette Veazey Gould

Joanette Veazey Gould, 81, died peacefully at Hubbard Hospice House on Saturday, March 8th, after a brief illness.  Joanette was born in Charleston, West Virginia on May 14th, 1943 to the late Alice Chambers Veazey and Louis Alphonsus Veazey.

Joanette was predeceased by her husband Dickinson “Dick” Gould, Jr.  The two met on a blind date in 1970, were engaged in less than three weeks, married in under three months, honeymooned at The Greenbrier, and remained devoted partners for 36 years, until Dick’s passing in 2006.

Joanette was a proud alumnus of Charleston Catholic High School (‘61) and Marshall University (‘65).  She was a devoted parishioner at St. Agnes Catholic Church and, later, at The Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, where she chaired the Christian Service Committee for many years and delivered communion to the homebound, among other acts of devotion.  Joanette was a committed volunteer in the nursery at Women’s & Children’s Hospital, as a host and traveler with Friendship Force International and a prolific blood donor to the American Red Cross, among other acts of service.  She enjoyed traveling the world with her family, playing tennis and spending time with a group of loyal friends and corresponding with old acquaintances through letters, birthday cards, and news clippings of potential interest.  She survived several bouts of cancer and its effects, with strength and grace, and lived independently until shortly before her death.

She is survived by her daughters Meredith Dean (Jason), of Waiteville, WV and Eleanor Gould of Rappahannock County, VA, son Dickinson Gould III (Angela), of Charleston, WV, and three grandchildren.  Joanette was the youngest of five siblings and is also survived by her sister Martha Veazey DiTrapano.

A funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart at 10am on Thursday, March 13th, followed by burial at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery at Spring Hill Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 6pm to 8pm at Snodgrass Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 12th.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages friends to consider donations to Hubbard Hospice House.
