It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved James David “Jim” Stump. Jim was born on November 16, 1954, in Charleston, West Virginia, to the late Chester Richard Stump and Virginia Fulk Stump. He passed peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family. A man of quiet strength, kindness, and faith, Jim lived his life as a true gentleman, guided always by devotion to God and to those he loved most.

Born in Charleston, Jim was raised primarily in Clendenin, West Virginia, where he spent most of his childhood and formative years. He attended Herbert Hoover High School, graduating in 1973. Jim went on to attend West Virginia University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in Graphic Design in 1977. During his time at WVU, he was a proud member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and played an integral role in the design of the iconic Flying WV logo-an enduring symbol cherished by generations of Mountaineers.

It was while working at Twin Towers that Jim met the love of his life, Sabrina. Their bond was immediate and enduring. Following graduation, Jim accepted a position with Marriott Corporation in Atlanta, Georgia. His career with Marriott took him across the country in various leadership roles over several years. Yet his greatest calling was always home, and his love for Sabrina ultimately brought him back to West Virginia. They were married in 1983 and built a life grounded in faith, family, and deep devotion to one another.

Upon returning to West Virginia, Jim served on the executive committee that helped open the Charleston Marriott Town Center, where he held the role of Director of Services. In the late 1980s through the early 1990s, he served as General Manager of Kanawha Country Club before transitioning into a successful career in real estate with Old Colony Company.

Jim was a devoted husband and a loving father. He and Sabrina welcomed their two children in 1984 and 1986, roles that brought him his greatest pride and joy. He loved his children dearly and found his deepest happiness in simply being at home with his family. Sundays were sacred, and family dinners together were a cherished tradition that remained constant through the years. Faith was an integral part of Jim’s life and sustained him through both joy and adversity. He was a proud and faithful member of St. George Orthodox Cathedral, where his devotion to God guided him through life’s most challenging seasons.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Sabrina Stump; his cherished children, Dr. Matthew D. Stump and Dr. Jacqueline H. Stump; his sister, Michele (and husband Tom) of Morgantown, West Virginia; his brother, Rick Stump (and wife Cindy) of Charlotte, North Carolina; his nephew, Jacob Stump (and wife Christy); and the loving members of the Howard and Teeter families. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester Richard Stump and Virginia Lee Fulk.

In his leisure time, Jim found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He had a passion for cooking and was especially known for making exceptional pies. He was a master gardener, loved spending time at the beach, and took great delight in Christmas, his favorite holiday, especially decorating and creating a warm, festive home for his family. Reserved, quiet, kind, and easygoing, Jim was known for his gentle demeanor and steady presence. He was, in every sense, a gentleman.

Jim lived a meaningful life defined by love, faith, and devotion to family. He leaves behind a legacy of quiet strength, generosity, and unwavering integrity. He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Johns Hopkins University, the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Witt Durden, Dr. Jeremy Stapleton, Dr. Mitch Rashid, and the late Dr. Steven Jubelirer for their compassionate care and dedication throughout Jim’s journey.

A service to honor the life of Jim will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at St. George Orthodox Cathedral in Charleston, West Virginia, officiated by Reverend Alex Mackoul. Burial will follow immediately at Sunset Memorial Park in South Charleston.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 19, 2025, at St. George Orthodox Cathedral.
