Paul Marvin Moore, Jr.
Paul Marvin Moore Jr. of South Charleston, West Virginia, passed away on July 9, 2026, at the age of 81.
Born on March 31, 1945, in Charleston, West Virginia, Paul, “Bunky,” was the son of Paul Marvin Moore Sr. and Eva Carter Fulks. After graduating from South Charleston High School, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. He later completed graduate studies at the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies, now part of Marshall University.
While attending the University of Cincinnati, Paul performed with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and participated in one of the orchestra’s European tours. He later joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky before returning home to Charleston, where he established his private music studio at Gorby’s Music. There, he established a percussion ensemble that later embarked on a European tour. His longest-serving work with a school was the work he did with the Richwood High School Lumberjack Express for over 50 years. Over the course of his career, he shared his love of music with generations of students, leaving a lasting impact through his teaching, mentorship, and musicianship.
Around the Charleston area, he was a past president of the Charleston Light Opera Guild and the South Charleston Lions Club, an Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow with the Boy Scouts of America, and a narrator for Amtrak’s New River Gorge route among many, many other achievements.
In 1988, Paul married Linda Lee McCollam Moore. Together they shared 36 wonderful years of marriage until her passing in 2024. Their love and partnership were the foundation of a life filled with family, music, and cherished memories.
Paul will be remembered for his remarkable musical talent, his dedication to teaching, and the love he had for his family. His kindness, patience, and passion for music touched the lives of countless students, colleagues, and friends.

He is survived by his son, Paul “Trey” Moore III; his daughter-in-law, Sherri Newman, of Lexington, Kentucky; his granddaughter, Brooke Hall (Steven) and great-grandson, Matthew Hall of Bardstown, Kentucky.
A celebration of Paul’s life will be held at a later date at the Charleston Light Opera Guild Theatre, 411 Tennessee Ave, Charleston, WV 25302.

What a great man, I met Paul at Richwood High School Band Camp back in the 90’s.
Always looked out for him at the Music Conference every year. Always shared stories every time we got together.
He will be missed.
