Stephen “Steve” Brown
Stephen “Steve” Brown passed away on July 24, 2025, following a short illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Patricia Brown; sister, Louann Brown; and maternal and paternal grandparents. He is survived by his daughter, Ashley Rebrook (Ian); grandchildren, Carson and Livia Rebrook; son, Adam Brown; and Dinah Brown.
Steve was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia, on September 24, 1955. He moved with his family to Charleston, West Virginia, as a young boy, where he would call home for the rest of his days. It was here that Steve would grow to be one of the most accomplished and respected athletes of his era. From his exploits on the football field and baseball diamond at Charleston High, to his Hall of Fame pitching career at Morris Harvey College (now University of Charleston), Steve was a fixture of the local sports scene, where his talents are still talked about to this day. He was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals after completing his college career, and spent time in their minor league. Steve is a member of two baseball Hall of Fame’s- The MC/UC Golden Eagles Athletics Hall of Fame, and The National Baseball Congress Valdosta Red Sox Hall of Fame, honors that filled him with immense pride.
Despite becoming a local legend for what he did on the field, his true passion was coaching others. For five decades Steve coached and mentored athletes of all levels and ages. From throwing batting practice for the Charleston Charlies, coaching t-ball and youth league basketball, joining the coaching staff of his alma mater, to introducing travel baseball to the Kanawha Valley- Steve’s influence was vast and far reaching. Helping young people excel at the games they love was his most cherished accomplishment.
Steve’s other passion was his family. He loved his children and was always there for them. There was rarely any event that his two children participated in that he was not present for. He continued this with his two grandchildren, who brought him so much joy in his later years. Steve will be missed greatly by his family, friends, and the countless athletes he has mentored over the years.
A Service to Honor the Life of Steve will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston, with Rev. Ron McClung officiating. Family and friends may visit one hour prior to the service.

I’ve known Steve almost all my life and as a legend with his baseball talents, his laugh and just alwats being a good guy. It wasn’t that long that I’d seem him and I’m so sad for his family for losing such a wonderful father & grandfather way too soon. He will be greatly missed by many! My sincerest of condolences & prayers go out to his family.
So sorry to hear about Steve’s passing. He was a great guy and a tremendous athlete. I played baseball with Steve at Morris Harvey and remember well his competitive nature and great curve ball. I was on the UC/Morris Harvey Hall of Fame Committee and nominated him for that honor which he richly deserved. I would see him often at UC events and Nautilus in Kanawha City over the years and we shared many wonderful memories together. He will be missed greatly. Rest in peace my friend!
Our condolences and prayers for the family. Steve is gone way too soon. He will be missed by all of us.
